The Central Election Commission (CEC) proposed for public consultation a draft decision to amend the Electoral Code. The purpose of the initiative is to improve electoral procedures, including by remedying the shortcomings observed during the presidential election and the national referendum held last autumn, IPN reports.

The proposed amendments take into account the recommendations made by national and international observers, who monitored the electoral process. They aim to improve the mechanisms for organizing elections in order to ensure a clearer and more efficient process.

Among the proposed changes are the adjustment of the deadlines for setting up polling stations and designating candidates, filling in the necessary documents for the registration of election contestants, clarifying the regulations on the sources of donations and income of parties.

The draft decision also stipulates measures to strengthen transparency in the electoral process and optimize the resolution of court appeals.

The Constitutional Court highlighted the need to close some legislative loopholes, and the Commission proposes measures to improve the process of registering candidates, completing the criteria for appointing members of electoral bodies and defining more clearly the "camouflaged electoral blocs”.

The remuneration of the staff employed during the electoral period, according to the forecasted average monthly salary, is also specified.

The use of donations in election campaigns is another aspect addressed. It is proposed that donations should include not only monetary contributions, but also those in the form of goods or services offered on more advantageous terms than commercial ones.

The CEC noted that interested persons can submit suggestions on the draft decision until March 28. Proposals can be sent by mail to the Central Election Commission in Chisinau or by e-mail to info@cec.md.
