Parliament on July 31 adopted amendments to the Broadcasting Code, concerning the creation of the legal framework needed to switch over to digital terrestrial television, IPN reports. After these amendments are published in the Official Gazette, the Broadcasting Coordination Council will be able to issue broadcasting licenses for using digital terrestrial multiplexes.

The given amendments were proposed by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and define the notions typical of the digital terrestrial television. They also lay down the normative framework needed to ensure the transition and functioning of digital terrestrial television in Moldova.

The need to switch over to digital terrestrial television derives from the obligations assumed by signing the regional agreement on the planning of the digital terrestrial broadcasting service “Geneva-2006”, which was signed by 104 states. The state-run company “Radiocomunicatii” already received a license for creating the first digital terrestrial multiplex with national coverage in which the public TV channel Moldova 1 was included on a trial basis.  

The digital terrestrial television offers a wide range of advantages, including efficient utilization of the spectrum, better picture and sound quality, more program channels , opportunity to produce attractive  local content  and opportunity for service and application convergence.
