Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian diplomats and Moldovan politicians and representatives of civil society Friday planted trees at the memorial “Eternity” in Chisinau in honor of the victory over fascism, Info-Prim Neo reports. It is already a tradition for one of the former Soviet countries to plant trees on the territory of the Chisinau memorial. The tradition started in 2009, when there were planted birch trees brought from Belarus. Sweet chestnut trees and snowball trees conveyed from Ukraine were planted in 2010. This year, Russia brought young fir trees. “The given tradition symbolizes our then military brotherhood and the fact that hundreds of thousands of Moldovans took part in the liberation battles as part of the Red Army. This event is designed to strengthen the friendship between the peoples that participated in the war against fascism,” said Russian Ambassador in Chisinau Valery Kuzmin. The event was also attended by Ambassador of Ukraine Serghii Pyrozhkov, Ambassador of Belarus Veaceslav Osipenko and a number of candidates for the mayoralty of Chisinau, who said that they came to render homage to the war veterans. “My grandparents took part in the war and brought victory together with many others. It is 66 years since the victory, but the attitude towards the veterans is not the appropriate one,” said the PCRM’s candidate Igor Dodon. On May 9, it is 66 years of the signing of the pact whereby Germany capitulated unconditionally in the Second World War.
