ALGA criticizes Chisinau mayor’s position on animals without shelter

The Public Association for the Protection of Homeless Animals ALGA criticizes the position of the administration of Chisinau municipality, which bans the people from feeding animals without an owner, IPN reports.

ALGA head Valentina Dudnic, who is a member of the Party for People, Animals and Nature (PONA), in a news conference at IPN said the public association aims to initiate the procedure for dismissing the current mayor of Chisinau municipality Ion Ceban, who made an unwise statement when he banned feeding stray dogs. But such statements are inappropriate for a mayor.

Volunteer Iana Kutasov noted that the killing of animals by starvation will not solve the problem of stray dogs. If Moldova aims to become a European state, it should promote European methods. All the pets should be identified, while the persons who abandon them should be fined.

Eduard Volkov, the head of the NGO “Conciliere-Soglasie” (“Conciliation”), said the Penal Code of the Republic of Moldova should be amended so that it stipulates harsher punishment for the persons who treat animals cruelly, including those who throw newborn puppies and kittens to the waste dump. In Chisinau, as in other capitals of the world, animal-friendly programs could be implemented if there was less corruption.

The activist welcomed some of the steps taken by the municipality, such as the purchase of cages for the animal shelter, the replacement of the administration of the cleanup company “Autosalubritate” and the holding of meetings with volunteers who defend animal. But the influence of “zoo-fascists” is yet dangerous, stated Eduard Volkov.

The activists plead for human methods of treating homeless animals, like sterilization, vaccination and release of animals who are not aggressive and who do not pose a threat to humans.
