The Theater “Alexei Mateevici” becomes “Alexie Mateevici”, which is the authentic name of the poet. A decision to this effect was taken by the Cabinet at the suggestion of the Ministry of Culture, IPN reports.

Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan said that the Theater and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, after analyzing documents, informed that the correct name of the poet is Alexie or Alexe. “In the Soviet times, given the continuous Russification policy pursued then, including by Russifying the names and surnames, the name was changed into Alexei,” stated the official.

“In this connection, the circumstances allow returning to the poet’s authentic name, Alexie Mateevici - the one who wrote the anthem of the Republic of Moldova. The Theater that bears his name is a platform from which many voices with national verticality, with love for the Romanian language and identity were heard. The institution continues working based on the same values, without deviations,” says the draft decision.
