Alert looms at Stanca-Costesti dam

The authorities in Moldova and Romania have decided to release the water from the reservoir at Stanca-Costesti at a volume of 850 cubic meters a second. They are inclined to displace the population living in the districts of Nisporeni, Leova, Hancesti and Cantemir, the press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergency Service, Tatiana Corceac, has told Info-Prim Neo. The army has already started to evacuate the population threatened by floods in Ungheni. People are asked to cooperate with the authorities. Asked by Info-Prim Neo, an official with “Apele Moldovei” (Moldova's Waters state enterprise), Ivan Cucenic, says now the water from the Stanca-Costesti pool is released at 900-1000 cubic meters per second to make room for the coming freshet. Cucenic says the dam can hold several hundred millions cubic meters more without exceeding its exploitation capacity. Ivan Cucenic says the water is getting down in the Prut river, so the flow is 1,300 cubic meters a second near Sireuti village, as the flow was 3,000-3,500 cubic meters these days. Near Chernivtsy, the flow has dropped to 400 cubic meters a second from 3,000-3,500. As for the Nistru river, the official says no essential change has been recorded, but the situation is stable. The rescuers' greatest concern is to strengthen the dams protecting localities. The threat persists, so they release by 2,800-2,900 cubic meters a second from the Dubasari dam. Ivan Cucenic assures the Ghidighici dam is safe and not threatening to flood. The rivers pouring into the Nistru have higher water levels, yet not alarming.
