The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration (AIE) are acclaiming September 8, the day when the Constitutional Court (CC) ruled to unblock parliamentary proceedings, as the day “the justice triumphed in Moldova”. At a joint news conference following the pronouncement of the Court, the AIE leaders said they expected such a decision, which would accelerate the process of forming the organs of Parliament. “We believe this is a decision in favor of the Parliament’s activity. This decision should unite us, should bring all the factions together at the plenary meeting of the legislature in order to solve the problems of the society”, declared Mihai Ghimpu, the leader of the Liberal Party, whose election as speaker of Parliament had been challenged by the Communists at the Constitutional Court. Vlad Filat, the president of the Liberal Democratic Party, called September 8 a “historic day”. “The decision of the CC is natural. We have been many times in dispute with the CC, but this time we can say that the national interest has triumphed over the interests of a party”, stated Filat. “Today is a day of triumph for the justice. This confirms that Moldova shall be a state based on the rule of law”, declared Marian Lupu, the president of the Democratic Party. According to him, today’s decision will speed up the establishment of all the internal structures of Parliament. Serafim Urechreanu, the leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Party, reiterated the position of the AIE that the decisions adopted in the legislature on August 28 had been legal. “I am grateful for the fact that this decision by the CC, which took so many hours to come to light, has been well thought. It was an expected decision. Now it is important to invite the PCRM to join us at the meeting on Thursday and begin to unblock the political stalemate”, said Urecheanu. Mihai Ghimpu announced that the next meeting of Parliament will take place on Thursday, September 10. Communist MP Vladimir Turcan, one of the authors of the appeal against Ghimpu’s election as speaker, confirmed the PCRM will participate in the meeting, adding that his party will comply with the CC’s ruling. Three of six CC judges voted to stop examining the constitutionality of the Parlaiment’s decisions adopted on August 28 (including the election of Ghimpu as speaker), when the Communist Party boycotted the proceedings. According to the law, in case of parity of votes, the issue stops being considered. Although the vote was secret, some press reports suggested the three judges were Victor Puscas, Vasile Railean and Valeria Sterbet.
