Actual consensus concerning European integration could collapse – political analyst

The Moldovan society could lose its interest in Europe as a result of the disappointment caused by the too distant perspective of the integration, the political analyst Andrei Popov told “Analitique” newspaper, cited by Info-Prim Neo. According to the expert, when Moldovan authorities displayed a real change of the foreign policy at the beginning of 2004, making use of the idea of European Integration, nobody said then that this process is rather painful, long-term and will last at least 15-20 years. Consequently, the hopes of many are linked to 2008-2009. Therefore, on the background of these expectancies, starting from 2008, the Moldovan society could be seriously disillusioned. In case authorities will not offer until then enough arguments referring to the course taken, the actual consensus concerning European integration could break up, the analyst says. Popov thinks that at present Moldovan authorities do not acknowledge the fact of temporal limits of those opportunities needed for undergoing active reforms as well as the importance of the existent support. Their effort is too insufficient for opposition and other political confrontation actors to stop accusing the power of making use of the European integration factor as a cover of the inefficiency of the reforms, but to make them actively support the promoted policy. At present, the “upholding the line” represents an especially important factor for the R. of Moldova, the analyst concludes.
