Activities to mark Press Freedom Day in Moldova

The Press Freedom Days in Moldova will be celebrated in May almost all over the country. There will be staged roundtable meetings, debates and a flashmob meeting to demand allowing the journalists to attend the Parliament’s sittings in the hall. A number of mass media civil organizations will mark the Press Freedom Days in Moldova.

Executive director of the Independent Journalism Center Nadine Gogu, in a news conference at IPN, said that debates in the context of the fourth Media Freedom Index in the Eastern Partnership countries will be held on May 6. The same day, the Center will stage a meeting of the Investigative Journalists Club titled “Reaction of the law enforcement bodies to journalistic investigations and strengthening of cooperation between mass media and the law enforcement bodies in investigating cases of corruption”.

Nadine Gogu said that this month the Independent Journalism Center will organize media education lessons in the national lyceums.

The Independent Journalism Center, in partnership with the Association of Independent Press (API), on May 8 will stage a flashmob meeting before the Parliament Building to demand allowing the journalists to have access to the sittings.

API executive director Petru Macovei said they will launch a contest for journalists entitled “Promotion of human rights in the mass media in Moldova” and the study “Reforms in the mass media in2009-2013: between promises and facts”, on May 7.

On May 8, the API will issue the first number of the supplement “European objective – let’s talk about Europe” that will be distributed by 16 national and local newspapers in the Romanian and Russian, in about 85,000 copies.

The Press Freedom Days are also marked at regional level. On May 2-8, the Ungheni paper “Expresul” is staging a caravan entitled “Manipulation fools us. Don’t allow anyone to think instead of you!”. There will be held meetings with the people and will be distributed brochures. The newspaper “Unghiul” of Ungheni will organize meetings with readers in May.

On May 16, the Association of Environmental and Ecological Tourism Journalists of Moldova will hold a meeting titled “Journalists and environment protection: between population’s concerns and authorities’ optimism. Case study: air pollution in Rezina”. On May 19, there will be launched the study “Press from the prospect of the environment theme” and awarded the winners of the contest for environmental journalists.
