A wanted man convicted in the "Theft of Billion" case has been detained. He allegedly participated in the theft of some 2.5 billion lei from the banking system of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
According to law enforcers, the accused acted as an accomplice in the interests of a criminal group and was responsible for ensuring the functioning of a commercial enterprise on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
Thus, the accused participated in the laundering of funds stolen by fraud from the Moldovan banking system in the amount of over 2.5 billion lei.
On November 23, 2023, by decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeal, the 43-year-old defendant was found guilty of the crime and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
