Some 90 educational institutions will be renovated in the next four years and the works for the first five will start until the end of this year. Also this year, education workers will get a 20% salary raise. This was announced by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca at the annual Chisinau teachers' conference, IPN reports.

The prime minister said that education had been put on the back burner for years and important reforms had been shelved, but things changed lately. “Education has indeed become a national priority in Moldova. Upgrading the quality of education is the most certain way of moving the country forward and of building a European future”, said Leanca.

Chisinau's education chief Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb noted that a major problem faced by the municipal education system is the high turnover among teachers. In 2013-2014, as many as 760 teachers quit schools altogether, and kindergartens suffered from a shortage of 130 educators. The leading causes are the low attractiveness of a career in education, inadequate salaries and lack of lodging. Because of the failure to optimize some schools with low student numbers, the municipal budget wasted 6 million lei on their maintenance.

Education Minister Maia Sandu spoke about the situation of pre-school education in the country. With the support of the Global Partnership for Education compact, 27 kindergartens were renovated to create 1300 places for children in all the country's districts, including for 61 children with special educational needs. 6 other kindergartens will be renovated by November. Further, some 900 institutions received educational materials and by the end of September every kindergarten in the country will receive 70 book titles destined for parents and educators.

As envisaged by the new Education Code Cod, the school curricula will be reviewed and a new mechanism will be implemented to assess teachers' and managers' qualifications.
