Some 55.1% of the citizens in the referendum would vote for amending the constitution, and 34.5% would vote against, according to a new poll commissioned by WatchDog.MD to the sociological company CBS Research. The study was carried out from October 11 to October 16 and was presented at a news conference at IPN.
According to the survey, 7.9% of those polled did not decide how to vote, and 2.4% did not say whether or not they agree to amend the supreme law so as to enshrine Moldova’s accession to the EU in it. “We see a slow development, but it is still a stable trend, starting with August, a gradual cumulative increase of about 3% in the “yes” option, a gradual decrease of about 2.5% in the “no” option, a fairly stable number of undecided people in the last two months. Very interestingly, and in contrast to the presidential election, we see that there are very few people who refuse to answer this question,” said the head of WatchDog.MD community.
According to Valeriu Pașa, the two campaigns, one for the presidential election and the other one for the referendum, follow different trends and do not influence each other. 54.2% of the respondents consider the decision to organize the election and the plebiscite elections is correct, as opposed to 45.5% in September. At the same time, the number of those who disapprove of the decision to hold the presidential election and the constitutional referendum simultaneously decreased from 43.8% to 35.5%.
The head of WatchDog noted that the answers to the question whether the citizens know the question put up for the referendum are gladdening. In September, not even a third of respondents, only 29.9% more exactly, said that they know how the referendum question is formulated and in one month the figure grew to 55.1%.
Valeriu Pașa said that there is a strong increase, compared to the previous month, in the number of those who said that they would vote in both of the electoral exercises. On the other hand, the number of those who said that they would go and take the ballot only for the presidential election decreased considerably. “We consider this is the result of the campaigns both in support of EU accession and against it. We see that, probably, there are more people who are against joining the European Union and they decided to go and express their voting option,” explained Valeriu Pașa.
Almost half of the respondents believe that the majority of the Moldovans support the country’s accession to the EU, while 31.3% consider that the majority is against accession. 69.4% believe that the referendum matters for EU integration, 57% consider that the plebiscite will irreversibly establish the country’s foreign policy course, and 41.6% said that the time is not opportune for a referendum.
The survey was conducted during October 11-16 and covered a sample of 1,034 people aged 18 and over. The margin of sampling error is +3.05%.
