2/3 of Chisinau’s teachers need better living standards
During 2005-2006 a diminishing of teaching staff’s fluctuation in the municipal education system was registered. About 600 teachers were employed in Chisinau municipality; the number of those who left schools is 2-fold lower. Tatiana Nagnibeda, the interim head of the Municipal General Department for Education, Science, Youth and Sports declared at the annual conference of teachers, that the main reasons determining teachers to abandon schools are the low wages and the lack of dwellings for them. The inadequate payment that state offers makes teachers to go work abroad.
According to Tatian Nagnibeda, about 80% of the petitions addressed by teachers to the Municipal Department for Education, Science, Youth and Sports refer to improving living standards. Statistics show that 2/3 of teaching staffs needs better dwellings. More and more teachers want to build dwellings through mortgage method, although the big majority does not have the possibility to use this method, the head of the aforementioned Department said. About 1500 requests were submitted on this respect, including for exempting them from paying the banking instalment.
Over 10 thousand teachers work in the schools and kindergartens of Chisinau.
