As many as 3 605 361 ballots were printed for the presidential runoff. Of these, 1 951 085 ballots weren’t used or were annulled, also because they were stamped incorrectly, the Central Election Commission has said.
Contacted by IPN, the head of the Commission’s Communication, Public Relations and the Media Division Rodica Sîrbu said the unused and annulled ballots are sent to the court of law that is the closest to the district electoral council together with the ballots used in voting. They are kept for six months of the day the legality of elections is confirmed. Later, all the ballots are destroyed.
Rodica Sîrbu noted that the number of ballots for the elections is determined based on the number of electors put on the State Register of Voters. The pre-registration, number of voters at the previous elections and the data about the number of Moldovans abroad provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration are taken into account when determining the number of ballots for out-of-country polling stations.
