Communist MP and former Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii has officially entered the race for the post of president of Moldova. The necessary documents were submitted to the special commission for election holding by the first deputy speaker of Parliament, Communist MP Vladimir Turcan On Thursday, Info-Prim Neo reports. The candidacy of Zinaida Greceanii was supported by 33 MPs of the parliamentary group of the PCRM. The leader of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin is not among the signatories. Turcan explained that Vladimir Voronin is very busy. “He now holds two posts – of head of state and of Speaker.” However, Voronin receives only one salary, Turcan stressed. Besides the signatures of the 33 MPs, the documents include the consent of the candidate, a statement showing that the candidate holds only the nationality of Moldova, the income statement, biographic data and a health certificate. According to the income statement, from January 2008 until May 14, 2009, the former Prime Minister earned incomes of 288,097 lei. The health certificate shows that Zinaida Greceanai is healthy. The commission’s chairman, Communist MP Valeriu Sava said that so far Zinaida Greceanii is the only candidate for presidency. The deadline for applications is May 14, 24.00. Vladimir Turcan voiced hope that there will be other candidates as well so that the elections are held in a democratic environment. The head of state will be elected on May 20. He is elected by the vote of three fifth of the elected MPs, i.e. 61 of the 101 MPs that form the legislature. The president is elected by secret vote. If no candidate obtains the necessary number of votes, there is held the second round of voting for the two candidates that won most of the votes in the first round. If the president is not elected during the second round, there are held rerun elections. If the president is not elected after rerun elections, the outgoing president dissolves the Parliament and fixes the date of new elections. The Opposition has repeatedly announced it will not put up candidates and will not participate in the election of the head of state. The parliamentary group of the PCRM is composed of 60 MPs and needs one more vote to elect the president.
