The young man who hit lethally by his car a 12-year-old participant in the cycling race VeloHora in September 2011 was sentenced to four years in jail, IPN reports, quoting the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The accident happened when the bicyclist was returning home after taking part in the race held on the occasion of World Carfree Day. On Albisoara St in Chisinau, the boy was struck mortally by a car driven by a youth aged 19.

According to prosecutors, the driver was speeding, travelling at about 95 km/h. After a trial that lasted for over three years and a half, the Rascani District Court of Chisinau convicted the young man, sentencing him to four years behind bars. The youth was arrested in the courtroom, but the sentence can be appealed to the Chisinau Appeals Court.
