Youngest Moldovan migrants are in Cyprus

The approximate number of Moldovan migrants is 600 thousand persons, having an average age of 35 years, the Global report “State of the Earth 2006”: a passage to hope: women and international migration” found, launched in Chisinau on Wednesday, September 6 by the UN Fund for Population. According to the report, the youngest migrants of the Republic of Moldova are in Cyprus. According to the International Migration Mission in the Republic of Moldova their average age is 28. In Israel Moldovan migrants have an average age of 43.5. In Spain, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Portugal, Germany and France the average age of Moldovan migrants ranges from 30.5 to 38.1 years. The fact that a lot of persons with reproductive age are migrating has direct and negative consequences over the birth rate of the Republic of Moldova. The general director of UNFPA Moldova, Bruno Pouezat declared at a press conference organized on the occasion of launching the report, that migration is a global phenomenon, determined by demand and generated by poverty and unemployment, a situation which is familiar to Moldova, which risks to be depopulated because of the poverty, insecurity, poor health of the population. In this way, the cited source says, the formula of migration “export of brains equals to dissipation of intelligence for the origin country and to intelligence profit for the host country”. Uncontrolled, illegal migration and trafficking in human beings constitute the most serious problems of Moldova. Migration, especially illegal one is frequently associated with economic or sexual exploitation and has negative consequences over the physical and psychological health of migrants when coming back home because of the limited access to the social and health protection services. Bruno Poezuat says that the lack of a constant monitoring system of demographical phenomenon’s evolution makes difficult emphasizing some tendencies of the social and demographical processes. He states that it is necessary to create a specialized institution or a National commission for Population and Development, which would have as main duty evaluating the information related to population and to formulate national strategies and plans grounded on specialized information, project and demographical analysis. The Global Report “State of the World Population” is launched annually by UNFPA since 1978. On September 12, 2006, governmental representatives from the whole world will assemble in New York at UN session exclusively dedicated to the migration issue.
