Young people urge families to plan at least three children
The population of Moldova declines swiftly. According to studies, the number of people is expected to drop to 1.5 million by 2130. A number of young persons staged a flashmob meeting in central Chisinau on July 11, chanting “I want one more sister, I want one more brother”. They aimed to mobilize the people, especially the politicians, to create conditions for the families to be able to plan at least three children, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The state should find instruments to stimulate the families to bring up at least three children so as to improve the demographic situation,” said one of the organizers of the event, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) program director Boris Galca.
Moldova needs policies that would foster demographic growth, including allowances that should encourage the young families to have more children as well as laws that would ensure a bright future for these children, said Boris Galca.
Attending the meeting, Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said the demographic situation depends not only on the ability of the men and women to conceive and raise a child, but also on the socioeconomic situation in the country. “The people will decide themselves how many children to have, depending on their possibilities. Our task is to create more possibilities for them,” he said.
The participants in the meeting shared balloons with the words “I want a brother” written on them and brochures about the demographic situation in Moldova and the world.
Most of the passersby said they cannot plan more children owing to poverty.
The drive was organized by the UNFPA Representative Office in Chisinau. The same day, the institution invited pregnant women to an informative meeting themed “In a word with 7 billion people, every birth should be safe”. The women received symbolical presents and flowers from the mayor. At the end, national singers gave a concert for the women.
According to the latest census, Moldova’s population totals 3.562 million.
