More than 200 young people from the districts of Ungheni, Anenii Noi, Straseni, Calarasi and from the municipality of Chisinau staged a flashmob meeting against the excessive pollution of the Byk River on May 29, IPN reports.
The meeting was held in the Great National Assembly Square. The young people tried to attract the people’s attention by dance. Ina Coseru, head of the National Environment Center and one of the organizers of the event, said they want to persuade the people to protect the rivers. “A campaign to clean the Byk was carried out earlier. It involved about 2,000 people,” she stated.
The young people plead for stopping the illegal pouring of wastewater into the Byk, especially on the portion of the river that goes through Chisinau municipality. “The State Ecological Inspectorate must inspect every company to see what they do with the wastewater. We called on Parliament to declare an ecological catastrophe in the area of the Byk River and received an answer from the Ministry of the Environment, saying specific normative documents must be drafted,” stated Ina Coseru.
Contacted by IPN, the head of the Chisinau Local Organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova Vlad Garaba said that according to the latest researches, the Byk and its tributaries are dry during the greatest part of the year, while the massive pollution is caused by uncontrolled leakages from factories and filling stations of Chisinau.
The flashmob meting was organized by the National Environment Center.
