Young people in Chisinau say no to skilled labourer jobs
The majority of high school graduates are inclined to enrol in educational institutions that later will allow the to have modern professions, such as lawyer, economist, accountant, manager – overlooking the capital’s labour market demand, which shows different interests, says Ala Supac, director of the municipal employment agency.
In the last few years, approximately 85% of the total number of vacant jobs registered at the agency were intended for skilled labourers. Young people in Chisinau refuse to enrol in trade schools, even though scholarships, accommodation and other facilities are provided. Last year approximately 2 thousand places remained vacant in these institutions, says Ala Supac.
Data from by the Municipal Employment Agency show that about 60% of vacancies are occupied by young people. Last year with the help of the Agency over 2600 found a job. According to the quoted source, despite the high requirements of the employer, sometimes graduates from educational institutions can not even use a computer, hence the Agency helps them enjoy free training.
A research conducted by the Urban Institute for Development shows that the major issue amongst young people is the high rate of unemployment. Young people are disadvantaged in comparison with adults because sometimes work experience is a mandatory requirement when getting hired.
Issues that young people confront with are low wages, knowledge that does not correspond to the employer’s requirements and the difficulty to get a better job without bribing someone.
