Young people from southern Moldova bring Europe at home

The Center for Education and Community Development in June-July staged a series of community initiatives aimed at promoting the European values. Starting with a cycling marathon and ending with the promotion of tourist attractions in rural areas, groups of young men and women from the districts of Basarabeasca, Cantemir, Cahul, Causeni, Cimislia, Leova and Taraclia were actively involved in raising awareness among the inhabitants of the importance of respecting the human rights and the basic values of the European Union in the localities in southern Moldova, IPN reports.

The first EU initiative took the form of a cycling tour entitled “We plead for freedom” and aimed to promote the European values among the younger generation. This was followed by fun, painting and handicraft workshops for children through which the European values were promoted, film screenings for people with disabilities. There were painted pedestrian crossings with appeals to take part in voting and wall murals that promoted gender equality and non-discrimination. An information and promotion campaign on the EU’s fundamental values was carried out with the aim of raising awareness and encouraging to embrace these values. A drawing contest was also held, entitled “Dignity in my vision”. For children and adolescents at the summer camp, educational, cultural and sports activities promoting peace and freedom of expression were staged.

Four more community initiatives are to be carried out this summer. Videos will be made with the involvement of young people, based on scenarios designed by them.

The community activities were staged within a project implemented by the Center for Education and Community Development, with the support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
