Young man hurt in explosion is in a serious, but stable state

The 17-year-old boy who was hurt in an apartment explosion in Chisinau this morning is in a very serious, but stable state. According to the doctor who examined him, he has burns on 20% of the body.

Igor Almatui, surgeon-pediatrician at the National Children’s Hospital “Emilian Cotaga”, has told IPN that besides burns, the young man also sustained a concussion. “He suffered carbon monoxide poisoning and has burns of the respiratory system and on the head, neck, arms and thighs. He is now on analgesics and receives care in the reanimatology section,” said the doctor.

According to Igor Almatui, a decision as to the need of transplantation of skin will be taken in three weeks, depending on how the boy will recover.

Liliana Puscasu, press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, stated for IPN that the explosion was caused by a gas leakage from the stove.

The firefighters were called to the apartment that is located in Chisinau’s Ciocana district at 10.19 this morning. The blast affected an area of 50 square meters, but caused no fire.
