Yevgheny Shevchuk comments on possibility of resuming talks in 5+2 format

A series of causes affected the dynamics of the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format. The fact that a series of agreements reached in 2012 weren’t fulfilled didn’t contribute to resuming these talks, said the Transnistrian leader Yevgheny Shevchuk, commenting on the possibility of reopening the negotiations, IPN reports.

According to the Transnistrian press, Shevchuk said the lack of political stability in Chisinau was another factor that prevented the holding of the rounds of talks. Neither the working groups on different areas were very active, while the Moldovan side avoided direct contacts until recently.

According to the Transnistrian leader, the Transnistrian side is ready to sit at the negotiating table and considers that the problems can be solved only this way. After such a long pause, concrete solutions should be suggested to the problems that accumulated.

Shevchuk didn’t specify what kind of solutions, but said he expects the Moldovan side to have a pragmatic approach to the problem of resumption of talks.

The talks in the 5+2 format were halted over a year and a half ago. It was recently announced that these would be resumed at the beginning of June.
