Yanukovych wanted for mass murder, acting president named

Ousted President Viktor Yanukovich was placed on Ukrainian’s wanted list for mass murder, acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said Monday. The Supreme Rada of Ukraine named Aleksandr Turchinov as acting President, IPN reports, quoting the Ukrainian media.

“An official case for the mass murder of peaceful citizens has been opened,” Avakov wrote on his profile. “Yanukovich and other people responsible for this have been declared wanted.”

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was due to fly out to Ukraine on Monday to discuss measures to shore up the country’s struggling economy.

The head of “Udar” party Vitali Klitschiko, one of the leaders of the Kiev protesters, told a TV channel that the new government of Ukraine should consist of technocrats.

The Maidan protests, which culminated in the departure of Moscow-backed President Viktor Yanukovych, began last December after the head of state suspended the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU in favour of closer ties with Russia. The recent violent clashes claimed 77 lives.
