X-ray systems banned as unsafe at nearly 20 health institutions

The use of X-ray systems at nearly 20 medical institutions, both private an public, has been prohibited after inspectors from the national radiation agency ANRANR found them to be obsolete or otherwise unsafe, Info-Prim Neo reports. ANRANR director Artur Buzdugan said the existing fines of 1,000 to 3,000 lei are not commensurate with the damage that unsafe X-ray equipment may cause to both medical personnel and patients. When irregularities of this type are detected at a medical institution, the ANRANR issues a cease-and-desist and establishes a time limit for their removal. If the administration fails to do that, the agency may suspend the license and ban the use of the equipment. The ANRANR has recently received a donation from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority which will enable it to locate and study sources of radioactive contamination.
