The participants in the scientific symposium „the Romanian language and literature in Basarabia”, taking place in Chisinau on the 31st of August, on the day of the „Our Language” celebrations, were unanimous in claiming that the language spoken within the boundaries of the Republic of Moldova cannot be considered distinct from the language spoken in Romania. The academician Marius Save, vice-chaiman of the Romanian Academy, director of the Linguistic Institute „Iorgu Iordan – Al Rosetti” in Bucharest, brought a number of arguments according to which the various dialects of the Romanian language present no substantial differences. Academician Ionel Haiduc, chairman of the Romanian Academy, said that it was counterproductive, from a scientific point of view, to tackle the issue of the language of a nation only from the territorial perspective of a country. In this context, the academician brought the example of the English language which has more than one dialect, but which does not change its name from one case to another. Within the symposium, the not always positive impact that other languages have over the Romanian language have also been discussed. During the event, other academicians, such as Mihai Cimpoi, chairman of the Writers’ Union in Moldova and of the Romanian Culture and Book Centre, Silviu Berejan, from the linguistic institute of the Academy of Science in Moldova, Anatol Ciobanu, from the faculty of letters of the State University, and Vitalia Pavlicenco, philologist, member of parliament have held speeches. The symposium took place on the site of the Writers’ union and was organized by the Romanian Culture and Book Centre, the Association of historians from the R. Moldova partnered by the Romanian Ministry of External Affairs – the Department for Relations with Romanians all across the world and the Romanian Embassy in the R. Moldova.
