Writer Mircea Ciobanu: We must seize European integration opportunity

Thirty-two years since proclaiming its independence, Moldova today is faced with an opportunity to achieve European integration at long last, and this opportunity must be seized, believes the journalist and author Mircea Ciobanu.

According to the writer, with a parliamentary majority made up of 63 MPs, the Action and Solidarity Party’s legislative activity should be much more intense. He admits that the government is making mistakes and the job done by some PAS representatives may have been disappointing.

“PAS is not a historical party, meaning it has virtually no history. It hasn’t been around long enough to build a doctrine and homogeneity. I know from people at the grassroots that PAS has accepted all kinds of self-seekers within its ranks. I mean, its membership isn’t necessarily very select. And of course, some do act disappointingly. I would have liked more activity in Parliament, at the legislative level, because today we have no right to leave work undone. And while there’s such a numerous team, it would be reasonable to expect a bigger number of legislative proposals from the parliamentarians themselves, whereas today most bills come from the Government. It indicates the Government’s reaction to something that is hampering its work. But it should be the other way around”, said Mircea Ciobanu during a public affairs program on Vocea Basarabiei.

The pro-European parties should be much more vocal, and those who advocate the union of Moldova with Romania should strengthen their efforts, the writer believes.

“There is a large political playground for pro-Europeans, including outside of PAS. There is enough political ground for very specific unionist movements as well. Today we don’t get to see too many political projects of businessmen who invest in politics just for personal gains. This is a stage of the past, and it was gone in 5-7 years, after we had the likes of Plahotniuc, Filat or Shelin. Today we are faced with the opportunity of European integration and we must seize it”, said Mircea Ciobanu.

There are 78 political parties registered with the Public Services Agency at present, and 60 of them are eligible to participate in the general local elections on November 5.
