World War II Soviet prisoners to get compensation from German state

Surviving Soviet prisoners of war will receive symbolic recognition compensation payments from the Bundestag of Germany. These are ex-soldiers of Soviet armies who were prisoners of war held by German forces during World War II, between June 22, 1941 and May 8, 1945, IPN reports.

According to the Embassy of Germany in Chisinau, the individual lump-sum payment will be of €2,500. This will not be issued based on legal claims, to third parties or successors of former prisoners. Applications can be submitted only by persons concerned or by proxies.

The deadline is September 30, 2017 and late submissions will not be marked. Application forms in German, English and Russian and further information can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Central Services and Unresolved Property Issues.

Written applications can be filed to the Federal Office in Berlin and to Germany’s embassies, which will pass them on.

According to the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family, there were 1,271 World War II veterans in Moldova at the end of 2016. The Ministry does not possess information about former prisoners of war held in German detention.
