World Hearing Day: Wearing of hearing aids is as normal as wearing of eyeglasses

The first cochlear implant surgeries in Moldova were performed at the Otorhinolaryngology Clinic of “Timofei Moșneaga” National Clinical Hospital in March 2014. Starting with 2020, the state has financed a special cochlear implant program. On that year, the incidence of mastoid apophysis and ear diseases was 38.7 cases per 10,000 people. The data were presented in connection with World Hearing Day that is marked on March 3, IPN reports.

Representatives of the National Clinical Hospital reminded that the first five children were operated with the assistance of an Austrian company and a project associated with “Liechtenstein foudation”. Later, there were performed 19 surgeries to introduce cochlear implants provided by private companies, NGOs, charity foundations, etc.

The National Public Health Agency said that a large part of the causes of hearing loss can be avoided by public health strategies and clinical interventions. In the case of children, 60% of the causes of hearing loss can be prevented by vaccination against rubella and meningitis and by improving maternal and neonatal care. In the case of adults, ear diseases can be prevented by controlling noise, ensuring proper ear hygiene and supervising the management of medicines that are harmful to the year.

In connection with World Hearing Day, MP Radu Marian came with a message saying that he uses hearing aids because his hearing is much beyond normal. “I started to wear them when I was 25, but I should have started to wear them much earlier so as not to allow sudden hearing loss. I admit that I didn’t want to wear them for many years as I experienced a psychological barrier – I didn’t want to be perceived as a person with disabilities. It was a big prejudgment mistake and I regret it now as I made my life more difficult in vain. Now, the wearing of hearing aids seems to me as normal as the wearing of eyeglasses,” stated Radu Marian.

According to him, the state mandatory health insurance fund offers resources to help those who have poor hearing or do not hear at all. Hearing screening in newborns, examinations and checkups, free provision with hearing aids within the auditory prostheses and cochlear implant national program are covered by the state.
