World Diabetes Day is organized this year under topic “Assistance in diabetes for everybody”
“Assistance in diabetes for everybody” is the topic of the World Diabetes Day this year, marked on November 14, in light of paying attention to the importance of informing and educating population regarding the prevention of diabetes and care of this disease.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this disease registered in the last years a progressive increase in the number of persons suffering from diabetes, being declared as an epidemic. At present there are more than 176 mln people suffering from diabetes in the world. According to the forecasts, this figure will reach 220 mln people in 2010.
According to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, diabetes is a major problem for Moldova as well. About 44,000 diabetics are reported at present, including a big number of young people and children. The incidence of the diabetes increased from 91,3 to 10 thousand persons in 2002, up to 120,93 in 1 January 2006.
Diabetes affects sanguine vessels, nerves, heart, kidney, eyes, causing invalidity to persons able to work. The cost for the upkeep of the diabetics is 7-10-fold higher than the expenses necessary for the efficient treatment and medical cares provided to these patients.
The doctors says that the diabetes can be prevented by maintaining a normal body mass, healthy nourishment and limit the consumption of refined fats and oils, reduction of consumption of alcohol and sweetened drinks, sanitary education of children in family and schools, practice of physical activity and a way of healthy life.
The Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Program “MoldDiab", includes the creation of the “Diabetes School” in the family doctor Centers from the country.
As many as 40 specialized offices, including 12 municipal and town, are in Moldova at present.
The World Diabetes Day has been marked since 1991, being instituted by the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization.
