Works to rehabilitate UN Alley in Botanical Garden launched

The works to renovate UN Alley in the Botanical Garden are underway. There will be planted symbolically 75 oak trees, which is equal to the number of years since the founding of the UN. Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ion Perju said UN Alley should have been inaugurated last year, but the project was put off owing to the pandemic. The budget of the works is of 435,000 lei, 400,000 of which was allocated by the Government, while 35,000 represents the contribution of the Botanical Garden, IPN reports.

UN Resident Coordinator for Moldova Simon Springett said the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN is an opportunity for recognizing the national and global solidarity.

Gheorghe Leucă, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, noted that in 2022 it will be 30 years since the Republic of Moldova joined the UN. In this connection, he called on the people to take an active part in tree planting activities and in other activities to protect the environment.

“The UN turned 75. This organization plays a very important role on the planet. The speeds and frequencies increase. As a result, the planet becomes more vulnerable,” said academician Ion Tighineanu, president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The scientist noted that all the decisions at international level are based on scientific research. That’s why the state should devote increased attention to the Botanical Garden, which is a scientific research institute.
