Works on first highway in Moldova closer to initiation

The Republic of Moldova is anchored in the European plans for the modernization of the transport infrastructure. In particular, the authorities in Chisinau have announced where the first highway in Moldova, which will connect the cities of Iasi, Ungheni, Chisinau and Odessa, will pass.

The detailed project of this highway, with the exact route and the financial estimates, was presented at the fourth Moldova Support Platform that was held in Chisinau last September.

Recently, the Romanian edition of the international publication Forbes noted that Romania, a constituent part of the given Platform, is the largest developer of road infrastructure in the European Union, with 780 kilometers of contracted roads and over 240 kilometers under tendering, according to the National Company for Road Infrastructure Management (CNAIR).

“Romania, through the CNAIR, is at present the largest developer in the European Union in the field of large road transport infrastructure. With 780 km of contracted roads, in the design or execution phase, and with another over 240 km now under tendering, the most modern technologies are currently used in Romania for the construction and design of high-speed roads (highway and expressway),” reads a post on the institution’s Facebook page.

The Prut Highway project consists of two stages — the first stage from Ungheni to Chisinau, and the second stage from Chisinau to the southeast of the country. The section from Ungheni to Chisinau will connect Moldova with the Romanian highway network, especially with the A8 highway, which will join Târgul-Mureş to Iasi and Ungheni, but which hasn’t yet entered the field works phase, and from Iasi - with the A7 highway, which is under construction. The highway will also include a new bridge as a highway, which is to be built over the Prut in Ungheni.

The Moldovan authorities’ intentions also include the objective to make sure that all the national and regional roads, over a cumulative distance of almost 6,000 km, are in good condition, with major repairs where necessary, or construction of new roads. Among the new roads to be built are the ring roads of Vulcanesti and Cimislia towns and also major renovations to large and important roads in northern Moldova.
