Working group to draft amendments to Election Code

A bill to amend the Election Code’s provisions concerning the presidential elections will be drafted by a working group constituted by Parliament within a month. A draft decision to this effect was passed by a majority of votes in the March 18 sitting of the legislative body, IPN reports.

Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu, who proposed the initiative, said the Election Code needs to be amended following the Constitutional Court’s Judgment of March 4, which restored the people’s right to elect the head of state. The working group can attract experts from different areas in drafting the bill, which is to be presented within 30 days.

The leader of the Party of Communists Vladimir Voronin expressed his indignation at the given judgment of the Constitutional Court and at the fact that Parliament accepts it so easily. He suggested holding parliamentary hearings involving members of the Court on this decision.

The chairman of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon supported the Communists’ proposal, saying the Constitutional Court adopted a number of controversial decisions, but there should be no doubt about the judgment concerning the election of the head of state.

Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu rejected the proposal to hold parliamentary hearings, noting it is for the first time that a request to hold hearings on a judgment of the Constitutional Court is made in Parliament and they should not forget that the Court is an independent institution.

The working group will consist of Lib-Dem Valeriu Ghiletski, Socialist Vasile Bolea, Democrat Sergiu Sarbu, Liberal Roman Botan, unaffiliated Igor Vremea (former Communist) and unaffiliated George Mocanu (former Lib-Dem). The Communist group didn’t delegate a representative to work on the group.
