Workers of Glodeni sugar factory stage protest

Employees of the Glodeni sugar factory announced they will picket a number of state institutions on February 16 and demand that the salary arrears be immediately liquidated and that the charges against trade union leaders be dropped, Info-Prim Neo reports. The protest will take place between 9am and 5pm. The workers will picket the Government, the Economic Court of Appeals, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime. The employees say they have not received their pays since June 2009. The factory is undergoing an insolvency process. According to the trade union committee, there are 2,500 tonnes of sugar to the value of 35 million lei at the factory that represent its assets. The factory's workers and trade union demand that the pay arrears be settled as soon as possible. But there are also other creditors that claim the sugar kept in storerooms. The employees complain that the administration of SA Glodeni-Zahar tried for numerous times to take the sugar stored at the factory away. During over a year, they have taken steps to block the transportation of the sugar, including by lying under the wheels of trucks and baring access by their personal cars. The factory's administration denies the accusations that it attempted to take the sugar out of the storerooms.
