At least 30% of the members of Moldova’s Parliament must be women. Democratic MP Valentina Stratan said that this opinion is shared by most of the women in the legislative body, who are for the amendment of the Law on Political Parties. Under the proposed amendments, the parties must be financed including according to the number of women in the electoral rolls.
“We need more women in Parliament and in important posts. We must ensure the balanced representation of the men and women. There are dozens of studies showing that the results are better where there are more women in the executive power,” Valentina Stratan stated for IPN. She added that the women are more responsible and less corruption and together with the men form successful partnerships.
Twenty of the 101 Moldovan MPs are women. One post of Deputy Speaker is held by a woman. There are also three women working on the Standing Bureau. According to a study of the economic and political participation of women in Moldova, the largest number of women served in Parliament in 2009 – 20110 - 26.
In world rankings concerning the women’s participation in the political system, Moldova is the 68th of 143 states. Compared with the neighboring Romania and Ukraine, this level in Moldova is higher. Romania ranks 97th, while Ukraine – 116th.
