Women's Political Club 50/50 calls on women to run in local elections

The Women's Political Club 50/50 has launched a nationwide campaign themed “Women can succeed – Run in elections! Be the change yourself!”. The campaign will take place between April 10 and May 5 in the form of roundtable meetings in all the districts of the country. They will involve women who will run in the 2011 local elections, women who head the district women's organizations of political parties, leaders of local NGOs and representatives of the mass media, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Club. The campaign is aimed at encouraging the women to get involved in the local elections. The message of the campaign is: “Women decided to contribute to solving community problems. This does not mean that they abandoned household work. The women are often accused of forgetting about the family and children when they become involved in politics. This is not right. The women can and are able to reconcile family life with political life.” The campaign is carried out within the project “Women can succeed – balanced participation in decision making” that is supported by Norwegian People’s Aid and United Nations Democracy Fund. The Women's Political Club 50/50 has implemented the “Women can succeed” project since 2002. Its objectives are to encourage the women to take part in decision making, increase the number of women participating in public life, and to strengthen women's capacities and solidarity so as to include the gender problem in the agendas of the local and district councils and of the political parties.
