The female members of the parliamentary groups of the Democratic Party and the Liberal Party and other employees of the legislative body called upon the women to become more involved in politics and in the decision-making process. Discussions with the people were held within the regional parliamentary forum “Dialogue with the citizens” that took place in Calarasi on April 11, IPN reports.

Liberal MP Alina Zotea said the Liberal parliamentary group will vote for the bill that introduces gender quotas. “We would like the women to be more insistent and to want to become involved in politics more as they cannot be forced to do something that they don’t want,” she stated. Alina Zotea spoke about migration, saying that about 1 million Moldovans work or live abroad and 80% of the migrants are aged between 18 and 45, which is the country’s labor force. The remittances sent home by the migrants represent 1/3 of the country’s GDP. Also, the children who migrated with their parents and then return home have richer knowledge and know more languages. But the country lacks skilled personnel and this is a disadvantage.

Democratic MP Valentina Stratan called on the women to become involved in the public and political life of their communities as the current women MPs did, being encouraged by other women MPs.

Democratic MP Valentina Buliga said the Democratic Party is headed by three deputy chairwomen and is one of the parties that promote women a lot. “The bill that institutes gender quotas must be passed. As far as we know, this draft law will be supported and the administration of the PDM intends to promote this law without fear,” she stated.

The people were urged to go to the local offices of the legislature to submit their complaints. As to child abuse or situations that are dangerous for children, the women MPs said these cases should be reported to the new people’s ombudsman for children’s rights Maia Banarescu.
