The UN Women-supported program GirlsGoIT has initiated the working out of the 4E Strategy for 2017-2020 for encouraging girls and women in Moldova to choose a career in the ICT sector, IPN reports.
Country Representative of UN Women in Moldova Ulziisuren Jamsran in a thematic event said the women feel very well in the IT sector that is considered a masculinized one stereotypically. “If we want the girls’ future to be good, we must urge them to apply more in the IT sector because namely technologies are now needed practically in any other area of life,” stated the UN Women representative.
GirlsGoIT manager Abayomi Ogundipe said the project has been launched this February in a move to offer greater access to women in the IT sector. The organizers didn’t have a specific strategy, but aimed to ensure that there are more women in the IT in 2020. Now the organizers decided to work out a strategy that would empower the women so that these do not only learn to program, but also discover how they can start an IT business.
Irina Revin, director of the IT company “Revin Pro”, told the girls involved in the project that the ICT sector helped her to obtain independence and freedom to take decisions and made her a creator.
Since the launch of the project, 89 girls have been trained in IT. There were staged two summer camps within which these girls created different platforms and Internet websites. IT courses were held in seven regions of the country, while seven girls became students of information and communication technology faculties in the country and abroad. GirlsGoIT clubs were opened in ten Moldovan communities. The program results show girls’ parents changed radically their position to the IT sector.
According to experts, the IT sector is the most promising one and the EU by 2020 will have about 1 million IT specialists. In this connection, the women in Moldova are urged to choose a career in the IT as the salaries in this sector are higher, while the development opportunities are huge.
