Woman donates kidney to son to save him

A 67-year-old woman donated one of her kidneys to her son who suffered from chronic kidney disease and was on dialysis. The transplant operation was performed at the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga” by a multidisciplinary team consisting of urologists, nephrologists and anesthesiologists-reanimatologists, IPN reports.

The Ministry of Health said the mother and her son were discharged in a satisfactory condition. According to specialists, the living donor transplants are much more difficult operations than transplants from brain-dead donors as responsibility for two lives is borne in the first case.

World Kidney Day is celebrated on March 9. In the Republic of Moldova, the services to prevent, diagnose and treat kidney diseases are provided free to medically insured persons.

Over 97,000 dialysis sessions were organized in Moldova last year at a cost of about 197 million lei. The money was allocated from the mandatory health insurance fund. Four kidney transplants were performed last year and so far this year.

In the Republic of Moldova, incidence of genitourinary diseases in 2021 was 180.2 cases per 10,000 people, up from 151.6 cases in 2020.
