Withdrawing Marian Lupu’s candidacy could be the first step towards a consensus on President’s election, Anatol Taranu

A consensus as to the election of the head of state could be reached if Marian Lupu withdrawed his candidacy, thus opening an opportunity for dialogue with the Party of Communists. It will then become clear whether the Communists’ demands for a neutral President are sincere. The statement was made for Info-Prim Neo by political analyst Anatol Taranu. “If Marian Lupu made this step, the Communists would be in a much worse situation than now. It’s a pity that PDM and Marian Lupu don’t realize they are so late with this move”, said Taranu. The analyst explained that a consensus on the President’s election cannot be reached because of different and sometimes conflicting approaches and interests within the Alliance for European Integration. “It’s obvious that a part of the AIE, namely the Liberal-Democratic Party (PLDM), doesn’t endorse Marian Lupu as President and this causes dissensions. This silent and unequivocal approach of PLDM is based on the rejection of Lupu’s candidacy by the Communists”, added Anatol Taranu. He thinks that as long as the Communists categorically refuse to vote for the President’s election, the fight for promoting Marian Lupu is meaningless. According to Taranu, the procedure for electing the head of state should be started by the end of the year. “It’s inevitable, but it’s not clear whether it will be done tin several stages or through one shot”. Taranu says that the politicians are expecting the decision of the Constitutional Court in this regard, which is likely to be an ambiguous one and will untie their hands and this will cause new conflicts within the AIE.
