Winter crops and vines will be affected if it doesn’t snow, minister

The damage cased by the too high temperatures for this period are minor. However, if it does not snow, the winter crops and vines will be seriously affected, said Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov. According to him, the trees in parts started to bloom, but luckily this is a local phenomenon, IPN reports.

“It is essential that the rain turns into snow now as the ice will affect the winter crops and vines. The forecasts for the northern and central districts are better as snow is expected here. It’s worth in southern Moldova, but we hope the temperatures there will be higher,” said the minister.

Vasile Bumacov voiced hope that the situation will improve and the damage will be much lower than the benefit from the precipitation falling now. “We annually face problems in agriculture. If it’s no frost, there is drought or something else. At European level, we are considering measures to make agriculture less dependent on the weather conditions. We cannot say that the winter crops were seriously affected. Surely, it would have been better if it had snowed, but the damage is insignificant now,” he added.

Rain has fallen in Moldova the second day, in parts heavily. The temperatures fell and there appeared glazed frost. Sleet was forecast for the next few days.
