The Northern Observer (Observatorul de Nord) newspaper proved to be the most equidistant publication in covering the campaign for the general local elections that took place in June, 2007. A National Competition on the matter was organised by the Independent Press Association. The prizes were handed on Tuesday, November 27, during a conference themed “The press in 2007 local elections: learned lessons, lessons to be learned”. The Northern Observer won the second place. Nobody took the first prize, since the jury didn’t find a suitable model for an equidistant coverage of the election campaign among the Moldovan mass-media. The second place also went to the newspaper The Morning Time (Timpul de Dimineata), for a balanced coverage of the election campaign. Both newspapers received each a money prize worth 500 euros. The third place winners are “Ziarul de Garda” and the Rezina-based “Cuvantul”, who received 300 euros each. Also, the jury offered two special prizes worth 150 euros to the newspapers “Unghiul” from Ungheni and “SP” from Balti.
