Winners of Good Governance Practices Programme awarded

Six settlements from the country have been awarded as part of the Local-Level Good Governance Practices Programme for 2007. At the local social-economic development section, the village Chetrosu in Drochia district was awarded for replacing the windows of the local secondary school, while Pohoarna village in Soldanesti district for mobilizing the community to repair the nursery school. The village Crihana Veche in Cahul district was awarded for its special partnership with the nongovernmental organizations, while Galesti commune in Straseni district was awarded for the project “Return to Traditions”, at the democratization of public life section. Among the settlements rewarded for modernizing the local administration were Selemet vilage, Cimislia district, for lighting the central street of the settlement with the help of the residents, and Antonesti village, Stefan Voda district, which outfitted the local high school with a heat supply system. Olesea Cruc, national coordinator of the Local-Level Good Governance Practices Programme, said that the best local practices were selected taking into account the local partnership, the initiative of the local public administration, the sustainability of the projects and engagement of the citizens as well as the rational use of the financial resources. According to the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in Moldova Vladimir Ristovski, the Council of Europe considers that this program is a of a major importance and is ready to cooperate in the development of the settlements. “We are sure that an effective democratic program and the good governance at all the levels are essential in promoting security and social-economic stability,” stressed the European official. Vladimir Ristovski distributed by a collection of relevant books to nine mayor’s offices and by a modern computer and a statue – symbol of accomplishments – to the six winners. The Ministry of Local Public Administration handed over diplomas to the winners. All the mayor’s offices that took part in the programme received by a Participation Certificate. The Good Governance Practices at Local Level Programme in Moldova was initiated in 2005 by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Government, mayors associations and the USAID’s Local Government Reform Project. Four towns and 36 villages from 21 districts of the country took part in the programme this year.
