Why union wasn’t effected at the start of the 1990s, Dabija-Ghimpu

In 1990-1991, there were preconditions for ensuring Moldova’s union with Romania, but there were also several factors that hampered the process, writer Nicolae Dabija and chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu stated in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Nicolae Dabija said that in 1918, when Bessarabia united with Romania, the situation was different than at the start of the 1990s. “Then, Russia was a country devastated by war and revolution. In 1990-1991, Russia and all the kept ex-Soviet bodies were very influential. Gennady Seleznyov, Chairman of the State Duma, admitted that the Nistru war of 1992 was organized by Moscow to hinder the reunion with Romania,” he stated.

Dabija also said that it was a mistake when they set the goal of effecting the union gradually. “They wanted first language, alphabet. In 1918, everything was done concomitantly,” he stated

Mihai Ghimpu said there were no political leaders who could ensure the union at the beginning of the 1990s. “There wasn’t the leadership needed to make the union, but the time was then opportune. 25 years have passed since then and we succeeded to do nothing. Unlike 1918, the people later were zombied. But if the then administration had taken a decision, the union could have been made,” he stated.
