WHO mission to assess implementation of national TB control program
A mission of the World Health Organization (WHO) has come to Moldova on a working visit to assess the results achieved under the national tuberculosis prophylaxis and control program for 2006-2010, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The WHO experts will be in Moldova until September 11 and will make recommendations for formulating a new program for the next 5-6 years. Moldova has obtained good results in combating TB, but there are yet problems that arouse concern and need to be solved, the Health Ministry says in a communique.
According to the Ftiziopneumology Institute “Chiril Draganiuc”, 4,936 cases of tuberculosis were reported in Moldova in 2008. Out of the total number of cases, 3,952 were new cases. 231 of the TB-infected persons were children younger than 17. The morbidity rate was 25.9 per 100,000 children.
The TB morbidity rate in Moldova decreased by 7.3% compared with 2007. At the end of the mission, the WHO experts will present a monitoring report.
