White Week starts for Orthodox Christians

Orthodox Christians on February 16 enter the White Week, which is the week preceding Lent. Meat in this period is not allowed, IPN reports.

Contacted by IPN, priest Victor Cerasau, of the Chisinau Church “Meeting of God”, said the White Week is a period of preparation for Lent, both spiritually and in terms of abstinence from meat. “During this week the faithful can eat milk, cheese, eggs and fish. They do not fast on Wednesday and Friday, excluding in monasteries,” he stated.

On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the Divine Service is held in cathedrals and monasteries. On Sunday, February 22, the Christians go to church to pray for God’s forgiveness. The day is known as the Forgiveness Sunday.

Lent this year starts on February 23 and ends on April 12, when it is celebrated Easter.
