When elections to People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will take place

It is not yet known when the elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will be held. A new date was to be set after the previously agreed date of May 16 was cancelled following the declaring of a state of emergency in Moldova.

Contacted by IPN for details, the chairman of the People’s Assembly Vladimir Cîssa said that after a state of emergency was declared, there was issued a decision by which the election campaign was interrupted. Later, the election date was cancelled. But an election runner appealed the decision to annul the election date to court. A new election date will be set after a final court decision is passed.

Today, the deputies from Comrat are to hold a meeting to examine the budget of Gagauzia for 2021. Another meeting was scheduled for May 14. If a court decision is made until then, the election date issue could be introduced in the agenda.

After the People’s Assembly sets the election date, the Election Commission of Comrat will announce the start of the election campaign, stated Vladimir Cîssa.

On January 20, 2021, it was four years of the convening of the first meeting of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, after the elections of November 2016. Earlier, the People’s Assembly agreed that the elections will take place on May 16, but the date was later cancelled.
