Political situation and COVID-19 challenges discussed by Maia Sandu in Strasbourg

The political situation in Moldova and the challenges generated by COVID-19 were discussed by President Maia Sandu and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Hendrik Daems in Strasbourg, IPN reports.

“In the discussion with the PACE President, I reiterated that the fight against corruption and the authentic justice sector reform are the priorities of my tenure as President. I thanked him for the PACE’s consistent support for the democratic transformations in the Republic of Moldova. I also thanked Mister Daems for the invitation to take part in the PACE spring session and for the opportunity to address a message to the Parliamentary Assembly,” Maia Sandu stated in a press briefing after the meeting.

She also said that she will today have a number of meetings with officials and these will center on the current political developments in the Republic of Moldova, the country’s democratic history, the human rights situation, the European integration agenda, the rule of law reform, methods of improving self-governance in Moldova and cooperation with the European Court of Human Rights.

Later today, President Sandu will also have meetings with the President of the European Court of Human Rights Robert Spano, Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic, President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the CoE Leendert Verbeek, President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio and Vice-Governor of the Council of Europe Development Bank Carlo Monticelli. In the afternoon, Maia Sandu will give a speech in the PACE session.
