A weighing-in-motion information system will be instituted in Moldova for monitoring vehicles on public roads. A bill to this effect was approved by the Cabinet on the initiative of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, IPN reports.

The new digital platform will automate the weighing-in-motion (WIM). The WIM devices are designed to capture and record the axle weights and gross vehicle weights as vehicles drive over a measurement site. The system will do measurements 24/7 throughout the year and will cover at least 95% of the trucks travelling on public roads. The system will ensure control over access to data and the security of collected user data.

The bill author said that through this system, the damaging of public roads by trucks carrying heavier weights will be prevented and the roads will be this way used longer and the costs for maintaining and repairing them will be reduced.
