The storm that hit the Gagauz capital Comrat on Wednesday caused damages assessed at about 4 million lei, according to municipal estimates. This amount is required to repair roads and roofs on multiple houses, public buildings and other constructions.
Comrat mayor Serghei Anastasov told IPN the heavy rain washed out 15 kilometers of gravel roads and the strong wind tore roofs from houses and other buildings.
At least 50 petitions for assistance came in at the Comrat City Hall from the public. A kindergarten building alone requires 1 million lei in roof repair, and Anastasov says he is afraid the municipality will not be able to cope with the costs without the central government's intervention.
Comrat still experienced partial outages today.
According to the Emergencies Inspectorate, on Wednesday, rescuers were called to respond to over 30 incidents in Gagauzia and elsewhere in southern Moldova. Downed trees had to be removed in Basarabeasca, Cahul, Căușeni, Ștefan-Vodă, Cimișlia, Taraclia, and in the Gagauz autonomy.
In Basarabeasca, fallen trees and branches damaged power and telecoms lines. Also in Basarabeasca district, a gas pipe was affected in Iserlia village. In comrat, four downed trees blocked access to the district hospital.
Disaster assessment commissions are working on-site to accurately evaluate the damages.
